Burgundy has been a region of great economic, spiritual and political wealth since the Middle Ages. At its peak under the Dukes of Burgundy, its duchy encompassed present-day Holland and Belgium. The greatest movements of monastic reform, the Cluniac and Cistercian orders, were born in Burgundy.
